Something to add immediacy to the interracial couple thread. This morning's St. Louis Post-Dispatch (Friday, August 30) carried a story on page 1 about an interracial couple whose house was apparently firebombed at 1 am Thursday morning. Joe Groce, age 38, and his wife, Harriet Cannida-Groce, had just moved with their three children (12, 4, 3) into a house on August 1 in a subdivision near Maryville, Illinois, an East St. Louis metro area suburb. It appears a Molotov cocktail was thrown through their bedroom window, but all five escaped the fire and smoke. A heartbreaking note--they had written the check for the first house payment Wednesday evening. It was burned up in the fire. Of course, racial prejudice is under investigation, and the ATF and FBI will probably be called in. The couple had chosen the neighborhood carefully, intentionally avoiding Glen Carbon, Illinois, where a cross was burned on a black family's lawn in June. "But," the mother asked, "where do you go where there is no prejudice?" Joe is white and Harriet is black; both parents work at the Army Reserve Personnel Center in St. Louis County.
