FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Annie Valk December 19, 1994 Phone: (919)660-3651 Southern Oral History Organization Second Annual Conference to be held in Durham, NC, March 10-12, 1995 The Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University and the Southern Oral History Program at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill will cosponsor the second annual conference of the Southern Oral History Organization (SOHO). The theme of the conference is "Oral History in the Contemporary South: Community, Academy, and Connections." Held at the Omni Durham Hotel, the conference will include workshops on developing oral history projects, oral history and video, oral history in public school classrooms, and public programming, as well as reports on current oral history efforts around the region. The keynote speaker on Friday night will be acclaimed novelist Lee Smith, author of Oral History and numerous other books, who will speak on her use of oral history interviews in creating fictional characters. Saturday's schedule will include the screening of the Uprising of '34 and Philadelphia, Mississippi: Untold Stories, with filmmakers present to discuss their work. Registration materials will be mailed to SOHO members in January.
