____________ Episode 41 of Africa Past and Present -- the podcast about African history, culture, and politics -- is now available at: http://afripod.aodl.org In this episode, Thabo Dladla, Conti Khubeka and Zeph Mthembu discuss the potential impact of the 2010 World Cup on grassroots soccer in South Africa. All three men are former professional players now coaching at the youth level. What does 2010 -- the first World Cup on African soil -- mean to these elders of the game? Will the tournament address the legacy of apartheid and the new challenges of globalization? Can the export of players overseas and the development of local leagues happen simultaneously? Putting profits before people, Dladla says, is a necessary starting point if we are to effect positive social change through sport. *** Africa Past and Present is hosted by Michigan State University historians Peter Alegi and Peter Limb. It is produced by Matrix -- the Center for Humane Arts, Letters and Social Sciences Online (http://www.matrix.msu.edu). Subscribe to the podcast on iTunes and other podcatcher sites.
