X-Posted from H-NET List for African History and Culture <H-AFRICA@H-NET.MSU.EDU> From: Joyce Youmans <youmans@MAIL.H-NET.MSU.EDU> _________ QUERY From: jrich@mtsu.edu Date: Wed, May 5, 2010 7:45 am Hello - I am wondering if anyone could suggest scholarly work on any specific US evangelist tours of sub-Saharan African countries in the 1960s and 1970s. I just stumbled onto the papers of Ford Philpot, a theologically and politically conservative US Methodist minister who led short crusades to the Democratic Republic of Congo and other countries from 1966 until 1978. It seems from my limited knowledge that these tours are often briefly referred to in the literature on African Pentecostalism and charismatic Protestant churches as an important influence, but I am unaware of any research actually on these crusades. Hopefully, this is the result of my ignorance rather than a real gap in scholarship. Aside from his books, check his article: "Africa Shall Be Saved". An Appraisal of Reinhard Bonnke's Pan-African Crusade", Journal of Religion in Africa, Vol. 17, Fasc. 1 (Feb., 1987), pp. 63-92 See also: Gordon, Tamar & Hancock, Mary, "'The Crusade is the Vision': Branding Charisma in a Global Pentecostal Ministry", Material Religion: The Journal of Objects, Art and Belief, Volume 1, Number 3, November 2005 , pp. 386-403 Finally, check David Maxwell's book that discusses crusades: African gifts of the spirit: Pentecostalism & the rise of a Zimbabwean transnational religious movement (Oxford: James Currey, 2006) I hope this helps. Best wishes, Eric Morier-Genoud _________ REPLY 2 From: "Kathleen Sheldon" <ksheldon@ucla.edu> Date: Thu, May 6, 2010 9:50 am A couple of recent collections that address the issue of Western evangelical work in Africa, as well as the rise of evangelical churches in Africa, are the following: Terence O. Ranger, ed., Evangelical Christianity and Democracy in Africa, Oxford University Press, 2008. Lamin Sanneh and Joel A. Carpenter, eds., The Changing Face of Christianity: Africa, the West, and the World, Oxford University Press, 2005. Kathleen Sheldon, UCLA
