X-Posted from "Hausa language, literature and culture" <H-HAUSA@H-NET.MSU.EDU> From: "John Philips, Hirosaki University" <philips@MAIL.H-NET.MSU.EDU> ---------- Date: Sun, 11 Mar 2007 12:00:47 -0400 From: "Don Osborn" <dzo@bisharat.net> Subject: RE: literacy statistics No idea on such literacy statistics in Nigeria, but my impression is that by and large there is not enough specificity in literacy estimates about script or even language, or even any certainty about what is counted and not. The Human Development Report (UNDP 2006) for instance gives a literacy figure for Nigeria of 67%, but in that case as for all countries (most of which are multilingual and a large number of which have more than one writing system used in their territory) we are left to guess about these aspects of measurement. Maybe some countries publish data on pluriliteracy and literacy in multiple scripts? Re currencies: There is also Arabic script on Chinese paper money (Uighur language), along with several other scripts (kind of on the margins, but they're clearly there; Latin characters are also present in the denomination). In any event it is need not be approached as an "either-or" issue, and indeed use of multiple scripts on currency doesn't seem to be a problem in a lot of countries. Don Osborn UNDP. 2006.
