X-Posted from "Hausa language, literature and culture" <H-HAUSA@H-NET.MSU.EDU> From: "John Philips, Hirosaki University" <philips@MAIL.H-NET.MSU.EDU> --------- Date: Thu, 16 Mar 2006 22:31:20 +0800 From: "Donald Z. Osborn" <dzo@bisharat.net> Subject: 2 Hausa language questions Sannu. I've been forwarded two requests: 1) For Hausa in Ghana, is there anyone who can be considered "expert" in its written form for help in compiling "locale data" for the language. Locales basically include partuciculars and preferences for a language in a location, for computers and the internet. (Along with this the question: Are there any particularities for the written form, compared to how it is transcribed in Nigeria or Niger?) 2) A translation firm is running into difficulties with paid translators of some material who claim there is "no word for" certain English terms and who prefer not to translate certain words. Re the former, I am always a bit skeptical since from experience with other languages you usually find something close, except where a culturally linked term in one language would not have a counterpart in another. Re the latter it's a cultural thing but there should perhaps be ways around. I'm not sure if the firm wishes to seek an additional translator but if they do, perhaps someone with a background in Hausa language study would be ideal (please contact offline).
