A while back I posted a note about a small research I've been doing re soybeans and their use in parts of West Africa. I'd still be interested in comparing notes with anyone working on the adaptation of soybeans & products to local foodways. One interesting piece of information I uncovered not long ago it that the use of soybeans as a substitute for making sumbala goes back much further than I'd thought - an instance was noted for instance in Guinea in the 1940s (which is not to say that it was widespread at all, though there are later instances in different parts of the region).
