Regarding the standardization of computer data encoding for non-standard characters and non-Roman alphabets, there is a major initiative involving many important computer hardware and software companies. More information can be obtained at http://www.unicode.org/ The Unicode standard has encoding not only for the non-standard Roman characters, but for many of the non-standard Arabic characters that are used to write African languages in Ajami. Those who are interested in developing computer fonts for African languages should be aware of, if not actively involved in, the Unicode project and should follow its progress. Fonts based on the Unicode standard have been developed commercially and are available for both Macintosh and Windows, but I know of few that have been specifically created for African languages. If anyone knows of Unicode fonts that have been developed for African languages, either in Roman or Arabic script, I would like to know about it.
