Greetings folks, I would like to assemble a panel for the 2009 American Society for Environmental History (ASEH) conference in Tallahassee that will explore the private sector's (or individual's) contributions to natural resources conservation and the outcomes. My paper will explore private water management strategies in the early twentieth century throughout the American South's mountain and Piedmont regions. Southern boosters developed large scale hydroelectric projects as a part of an aggressive economic development program, and these projects ultimately influenced the region's urban development, aquatic environments, and New Deal conservation policy. Papers dealing with questions about how private conservation influenced urban/rural hinterland relationships, technological challenges/consequences, public policy, and recreation would all be welcome. Thanks, Chris Manganiello University of Georgia cmango@uga.edu
