------------------ The current convention is that US Army officers assigned to the Army Staff and the Army Secretariat (both mainly at the Pentagon) and National Guard Bureau wear GS branch insignia while assigned there. Officers assigned to General Staff with Troops (anything below Army Staff, Secretariat, or NGB) positions are also supposed to wear GS insignia, although enforcement varies. The divisions I saw up close (82d, 101st, 1st Cavalry) were pretty particular about officers wearing it; the army service component command in which I worked (in this case, US Army Special Operations Command) only mandated it for officers in the Office of the Chief of Staff and the staff primaries. All others managed to avoid it. The litmus test for "general staff with troops" is a designator in the table of organization and equipment (TOE) or table of distribution and allowances (TDA) depending on the unit. If in such a flagged position, it's considered GS with troops, although it's inconsistently documented. There are joint organizations that have general staff with troops-flagged positions, but 10 USC 155 prohibits the Joint Staff from serving as a general staff organization. Army officers assigned to the Joint Staff wear their basic branch insignia.
