Vernacular Georgia is pleased to announce the co-winners of the inaugural Douglas F. Seymour Prize in Vernacular Scholarship for 2005. Amy Fehrenbacher, a MFA candidate in Architectural History at the Savannah College of Art and Design won for her paper, "The Rise and Fall of the Neighborhood Corner Store: An Analysis of the Duffy Street and Jefferson Street intersection and its stores." Amanda Mros, a MA candidate in History at the University of West Georgia won for her paper entitled "Carrollton's Peachtree Street: Maple Street as an Illustration of the Growth of Carrollton, 1831-2004." Both papers demonstrated fine research, thoughtful analysis, good writing, and were well presented. It is precisely talented and curious people such as Ms. Fehrenbacher and Ms. Mros that Vernacular Georgia needs to cultivate to better appreciate the fine built landscape of the great state of Georgia. The co-winners each received a $250 check and a certificate signed by the board of Vernacular Georgia.
