This in further response to the inquiry from Joe Walker on Americans in the Gulag. Check the following site on the web: www.trib.net/special/soviet110997/spy.htm This should provide you with a rather lengthy article on American leftists who found themselves in the FSU and ended up spending years in the Gulag or being executed outright. At least one of the persons mentioned, Thomas Sgovio, spent some 20 years in the Gulag, a good deal of it in Kolyma. He survived and before his death wrote an autobiographical work, entitled Dear America - one of the most harrowing memoirs I have ever read on the Gulag experience. The book was published privately, so it may be somewhat difficult to get hold of, but is worth whatever effort you may put into getting to read it. If for some reason the above www address doesn't work, just try writing Sgovio on the altavista search engine and you should get it without any trouble... Leo Kaplan leo@cooper.edu
