In conjunction with the 47th Annual Southern Conference on Slavic Studies (March 26-28, 2009) in Charlottesville, Va., the University of Virginia is holding a symposium, "Russia's Resurgence: Empire, Energy, and Global Influence," on Friday, March 27, in 402 Wilson Hall, 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, and also will constitute the plenary session of the SCSS. The symposium will feature the following guest speakers: Chrystia Freeland: U.S. managing editor of the Financial Times and well known journalist on Russian affairs. Author of Sale of the Century: Russia's Wild Ride from Communism to Capitalism (2000) and of an award-winning interview of Russian "oligarch" businessman Mikhail Khodorkovsky (2004) just before his arrest and conviction on fraud charges in 2005. Andrei Illarionov: President Vladimir Putin's economic policy advisor from 2000 to 2005. Upon resigning at the end of 2005, he protested the government's course, declaring Russia no longer a free country. He is now a senior fellow at the Cato Institute's (Washington, DC) Center for Global Liberty and Prosperity. Andranik Migranyan: member of the advisory councils of Presidents Boris Yeltsin and Vladimir Putin (1993-2000), political scientist and commentator, and now director of the Russian Institute for Democracy and Cooperation (New York), an independent think tank aiming to foster a positive image of Russia abroad and to improve relations between the Russian Federation and the U.S. The discussion will be moderated by Allen Lynch, Professor of Politics at the University of Virginia and author of How Russia Is Not Ruled: Reflections on Russian Political Development (2005). The event will be dedicated to the memory of Thomas T. Hammond (1920-1993). Hammond was the first professor of Russian history at the University of Virginia (1949-1991), the author or editor of several books on the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, founder of U.Va.'s Center for Russian and East European Studies, and among the founders of the Southern Conference on Slavic Studies. -- Robert Geraci Associate Professor, Corcoran Department of History and Director, Center for Russian and East European Studies University of Virginia P.
