In early XVIIIth century, the territory under French influence covered half of North America. At its zenith (circa 1713-14, on the eve of the Treaty of Utrecht which ended the War of the Spanish Succession), it extended from Acadia and Newfoundland on the Atlantic coast to the Rocky Mountains and from the Hudson Bay in the north through the Plains, the Great Lakes, the Ohio and Mississippi valleys down to Louisiana on the Gulf of Mexico. In fact, except for Spanish Florida and the New England corridor between the Atlantic and the Appalachian Mountains, the rest was controlled by the French and their Amerindian allies.
