In Boston we natives call it tonic, although 200,000 college students arrive each Fall calling for soda or (if from the Midwest) pop. Whatever it is called, I do not permit students to have breakfast in a can (or in any other form) during my class. Neither may they sleep, read, chat, chew or spit. What happened to manners in the college classroom? I will be glad to discuss these matters with anyone attending the North East Popular Culture Association annual conference at Bates College on October 28-29.
