Subject: RETRIEVING LOG FILES: ANOTHER GEARHEAD TIP

There are two ways to get at the files for our list. In a previous tip, you
have
received instructions on doing searches for particular topics. However, you may
want to look at a chronological period. Suppose you went on a vacation and set
yourself for NOMAIL so that wouldn't have dozens of individual messages when
you
got back. But you would still like to have a sense of what was discussed in
your
absence. (Following our serial discussions is a little like watching a soap
opera or reading _Doonesbury_.) For that purpose, you could get the files for
our activities during the period you were gone. The following receipes tell you
how.
I. THE INDEX COMMAND
Send a message to listserv in the following form and you will get a
chronologically dated listing of our files.
index h-pcaaca
This command must go the listserv@uicvm.uic.edu--not to our list.
You will get back something like the following. (I have cut off the list for
reasons of space in this message.)

This list goes back to day one and would continue through today if I had listed
all of it.
II. GETTING THE LOG FILES
When you have the list on your screen, you can identify a period of time for
which you may want the log files. Identify the period you want, and then issue
the following command--again to the listserver@uivcm.uic.edu.
get H-PCAACA LOG9402C
get h-pcaaca log9402a <if you would like additional ones, add additional
lines>
A log file with all transactions within the specified date range should come
back to you. Scroll to your heart's content. (I have put the commands in both
upper- and lower-case to indicate that it matters not.)
