---------------------------- Original Message ---------------------------- Subject: frame construction terminology From: "Janet Sheridan" <jlsheridan@verizon.net> Date: Thu, March 15, 2012 3:31 pm To: H-NEW-JERSEY@H-NET.MSU.EDU -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------ List - In the course of research on an early free-black settlement in southwestern NJ, I've come across some terminology I don't understand and ask for your help. In building liens in the late 19th century, I'm finding this sort of description of frame houses just built: "frame dwelling house twelve feet in front by fourteen feet deep with twelve feet posts." (italics mine) What is the meaning of "with twelve feet posts" ? Does it refer to the height of the corner posts sill to roof? Or does it refer to posts in the ground to a depth of twelve feet? These houses were built in a very low, marshy area. Any experience with this? Thank you. Janet L. Sheridan Cultural Heritage Consulting Salem, NJ 08079 http://sheridanpreservation.com/
