The museum is a 501c non-profit opened as a combined effort of a vast social network centered around Sylvester Francis in the historic Treme neighborhood. I am looking at the subjective meaning and value of the unpaid social work that is a sort of currency in the community surrounding the Backstreet, as well as outside efforts to commodify and capitalize on these traditions and participants' response and resistence to those efforts, as well as the meaning of the museum to the community as a vehicle for sharing the results of the intensive work that goes into their street traditions while maintaining control over the traditions and the interface with outsiders. 4) Sylvia G.
