------------------------------------------------------------- The Cultural Resource Management Program at the University of Victoria is pleased to offer the following 6-day immersion course for professionals in museums, heritage sites, and related organizations: Strategic Information Management in Museums Museums manage tremendous amounts of diverse information. Typically, the museum catalogue has been the focus of those interested in museum information, but the array of things that museums know - whether as their "information architecture" or (the new buzzword) "cyberinfrastructure" - goes beyond the simple catalogue. Recognizing the dimensions, value, and potential of this information and planning for its strategic integration and management provide the focus for this new immersion course. Whether you work with collections, research, programming, marketing and audience development, or management within a museum or heritage setting, this course strengthens your ability to: * define the types of information managed across your institution * develop strategies for managing information that is not currently system-dependent * recognize the current and potential strategic value of information management * appreciate the perspective that computer and web-based information systems bring to problems of organizing, processing, and accessing information * identify opportunities to integrate information, enhance use and value, and generate innovative perspectives * apply principles of strategic planning to identify information management opportunities and strategies * develop information management strategies that allow re-purposing content, enable interoperability, and reduce the impact of multiple systems, platforms, and software solutions * identify resources (human and other) required to accomplish your strategic goals Instructor: James Blackaby is Director of Internet Strategies and Information Services, Mystic Seaport, Connecticut Dates: June 23 to 27, 2003, with preparatory assignment Please register by: May 30 Fee: $643 (Canadian funds, credit and non-credit participation options.)
