Enviado el: lunes, 18 de marzo de 2002 09:20 I use the Americas series in a core course "Culture and Civilization of Latin America". These videos work well to introduce students to Latin America in one semester. The students come from a variety of majors so there is something for each in the series. I found they work well in classes that meet only once a week - double period. That way I can set up what is coming - discuss the reading they have done - show the video then relate the video to the readings. I use two of the books that were produced to go with the series - Winn and the reader edited by Rosenberg. They read all of Winn and I have them go over some of the essays in Rosenberg carefully, writing summaries of them to use as a basis of discussion. I also use the Global Studies volume on Latin America (put out by Daskins publishers). This in part takes care of the dated material issue. They have a chapter on each country which is too short but you can get into some good issues - such as the so-called 'Indian problem' compared in Mexico, Guatemala, and Bolivia - race relations, integration etc. Then we also consider Indians in Brazil and openin the rain forest. There is a good data sheet on each country that breaks down ethnic persentages, GNP, infant mortality etc. which helps to compare one country to the next. Most students respond well to this material. charlie carreras Ramapo College ccarrera@ramapo.edu 201-825-3840 201-529-7429 go for it!
