Have you seen Secretary of State Trey Grayson's new website for kids studying about Kentucky? Check it out. http://www.sos.ky.gov/kids The site includes resources about history, geography, industries and tourist sites. A compendium of "famous Kentuckians" in one area, and in another area focusing on the economy, agriculture and coal are featured under an image of a pristine thoroughbred foaling barn. One section is dedicated to the structure of Kentucky government with lists of elected and appointed officials. It's not clear who the "resources and links" area is for, but all are separated from the "games, activities and contests" area of the site. This website is part of a recommendation from the Civic Literacy Initiative of Kentucky (CLIK), headed up by Secretary Grayson through his Kentucky Workgroup on Civic Literacy. According to the welcome statement, "This site is designed to help Kentuckians of all ages understand and participate in government and the civic process.... Students, parents, and educators should visit the resources and links section for a list of educational and fun resources relating to government and civics." Ironically (unintentionally?), the site directs users to go to Virginia to participate in a Youth Leadership Institute there if they want to have some hands on learning about civic literacy. Let me know what you think. Randolph -- Randolph Hollingsworth, Ph.D. University of Kentucky H-Kentucky List Editor hollings@mail.h-net.msu.edu http://www.h-net.org/~kentucky/
