H-JAPAN August 7, 2006 Editor's note: While a starting date of 300 CE for early medieval flies in the face of every periodization scheme in Japanese history, this should still be of interest to Japan scholars. Call for authors: ABC-CLIO is in the process of developing a comprehensive 21-volume Encyclopedia of World History. It should become a standard reference work in libraries worldwide. We are seeking writing contributions from interested scholars to prepare 500-1500 word entries on Asian history and culture. Contributors who write up to 5,000 words will receive writing credits and free access to the online version of the completed encyclopedia. If you would be interested in writing 1 or more entries, please send a c.v. and, if possible, a short writing sample to Fred Nadis and/or Monique Vallance: Fred Nadis <mailto:FNadis@abc-clio.com> Monique Vallance <mailto:MVallance@abc-clio.com> OPEN TOPICS: (with word counts) 300-1000 CE - EARLY MEDIEVAL Gender in Medieval East Asia 1000 words Religion and Popular Culture in Japan 500 The price paid by Daughters-in-Law for Social Stability 150 "The Perfect Bride" 150 Urban Classes in East Asia 1000 Japanese and Korean Literature [300 -1000 CE] 1000 Buddhist Monumental Sculpture 1000 The World of Buddhist Pilgrimages 1000 Japan from the Yamato through Fujiwara Periods 800 The Life of the Japanese High Aristocracy 250 Japanese embassies to China 607-838 600 Ennin's Observations on his Journey to China 200 Wet Rice Agriculture in Early Medieval East and South Asia 800 Early Medieval Industry Cities in Early Medieval East Asia 1000 The spread of Mahayana Buddhism to Central and East Asia 1000 Evolving technology of Early Medieval Wet Rice Agriculture 1000 1000-1500 C.E.
