CALL FOR PAPERS Council for European Studies, 13th International Conference of Europeanists "Europe in the New Millenium: Enlarging, Experimenting, Evolving" Palmer House, Chicago, March 14-16, 2002 The Council for European Studies, the American professional association of social scientists working on Europe, announces a call for papers and panels for its 13th International Conference of Europeanists, to be held in Chicago, March 14-16, 2002. The deadline for receipt of submissions is October 15, 2001. Since its first conference in 1979, the Council for European Studies has brought together American and European scholars to foster a trans-Atlantic intellectual community. The Council strongly encourages interdisciplinary panels and papers on Eastern or/and Western Europe that promote dialogue across boundaries within the academy and beyond. Participation by graduate students is welcome. The Council invites proposals for panels and papers from all fields of study on a wide range of topics. However, we especially welcome proposals on the following themes: · European and National Identities in Transition · Gender, Race, and Class Conflict · Globalization, Europeanization and Regionalization · Postcolonialism and Europe · The Making of Borders and Boundaries · The Relationship between European Studies and Other Fields · Transformations in Welfare States and Economic and Social Policy We also welcome sessions that are innovative in format, such as roundtables and debates, as well as sessions that focus around pre-circulated papers posted on the web. Panel proposals must include a brief statement about the panel theme and abstracts for all papers. Individual papers will be assigned to panels by the program committee, as appropriate. All submissions must be accompanied by the conference cover sheet, available on the Council's website, www.europanet.org, and include seven copies of all materials. Papers and panels will be selected on a competitive basis by the program committee. Participants will be notified by November 15, 2001. A limited number of subsidies are available for scholars travelling from Europe and for graduate students. These subsidies consist of reimbursement for three nights at the basic room rate at the conference hotel for scholars travelling from Europe and two nights at the basic room rate for graduate students. Submissions should include an application for subsidy, available on the Council's website. A special grant, the Young Scholars Networking Grant, will be made to young scholars who develop panels using the Europanet website to connect with other scholars and whose panels are accepted by the program committee. The members of the program committee are: Michèle Lamont (committee chair, sociology, Princeton University); Judith Coffin (history, University of Texas at Austin), Susan Gal (anthropology, University of Chicago), Christian Joerges (law, European University Institute, Florence), Jonah Levy (political science, University of California, Berkeley), George Steinmetz (sociology, University of Michigan), Susan Woodward (political science, CUNY-Graduate Center), and John K. Glenn (Executive director, CES). Questions can be addressed to John Glenn at jkg14@columbia.edu. All submissions must be made by regular postal mail (email and fax submissions will not be accepted) and be addressed to: Program Committee 2002 Council for European Studies 420 West 118th Street, Mailcode 3310 New York, NY 10027 ---------------------------------------------------- John K.
