Colleagues, I would like to solicit information from list members as I prepare a new course for the spring. I have the opportunity to teach Modern Italian History for the first time. Although I have taught on interwar/fascist Italy before, I am less familiar with the teaching resources available for the periods before and after. I would welcome input on materials that you have found pedagogically useful for the following categories: General textbooks: Collections of translated primary sources: AV materials (e.g. film, documentaries, web sites): Please note that the vast majority of my students won't know Italian, so I am especially interested in English language texts, subtitled/dubbed films, etc. My thanks in advance, Karl Qualls Department of History Dickinson College, USA Editor's note: I would like to take this opportunity to ask the members of the network (or at least those of us who are reading mail over the summer) to feel free to speak also to the general issue of a semester survey course in modern Italian history (when do you begin, when do you end, topics addressed, etc.). Let's provisionally say that we will address this issue until June 27 (or sooner if the discussion lags). If you would like to see the list discuss pedagogical issues related to another course (say the history of fascism, liberal Italy, early modern Italian history, the Renaissance, etc.), please send me an email and I will make the announcement as soon as one discussion ends. It could be an interesting way to spend our summer.
