Dear members of H-Holocaust, I am writing my dissertation on the Wehrmacht brothels on the eastern front during World War II. Soviet (and other?) women worked in these primarily out of desparation for food, and the Wehrmacht set them up in an attempt to control venereal disease. I am trying to find out which archives I need to visit in the former Soviet states, and am also looking for more sources that mention brothels during the Holocaust (whether on the eastern front or not). There is not that much information on this topic, but this is what I do know: I am aware of Christa Paul's _Zwangsprostitution_, Franz Seidler's _Prostitution_, Willi Bauer's _Geschichte und Wesen_. I also know about Curzio Malaparte's _Kaputt_ and Hirschfeld Magnus's _Sittengeschichte_. As far as memoirs go, I know of Nanda Herbermann's _Der gesegnete Abgrund_, but I think there must be many more. Does anyone know of other memoirs, published articles, papers, etc. that address this topic? In addition, I know that the military archives in Freiburg will be a vital source for me, but does anyone know of other archives that could be useful for me, either in Germany or in Ukraine, the Baltic States, Belorussia, Russia, etc.? In the occupied regions, I will naturally look for documents on the administration of the brothels (which was left to the civilians), but I will also search for police records, doctors records, etc. which may highlight problems of venereal disease, rape, etc. I just haven't yet figured out where such documents and archives exist. Thank you so much in advance for any help! Wendy Jo G. Wendy Jo Gertjejanssen Department of History University of Minnesota (612) 624-7812 email: gertj001@maroon.tc.umn.edu
