Israel's Only 24-Hour Internet News Service " IRA HELPED NAZIS DURING WORLD WAR II (IINS News Service-Israel-10/12-AFP) LONDON - The IRA supplied military information to Germany during World War II, enabling the German air force to bomb Belfast, killing more than 1,000 people, according to a former Irish senator quoted in The Sunday Telegraph. The former senator, Sam McAughtry, said he had been given the information by a former member of the Irish Republican Army, who has refused to allow his identity to be revealed for fear of reprisals. The ex-IRA man reportedly said he had helped to collect information about targets in the Belfast dock area and about the damage caused by German air raids. He gave the information to his "commanding officer" in the IRA, who passed it on to the German Mission in Dublin. In 1941, the Luftwaffe carried out four bombing raids on Belfast that left 1,100 dead and 25,000 homeless. "The IRA were particularly involved in reporting the damage done in the first raid so that it could be destroyed in the second," said McAughtry, who has divulged the information in a program due to be broadcast on Wednesday on Channel Four television.
