I just received an H-HOLOCAUST post from Warren Thompson [thomp@lebmofo.com] stating inaccurately that "an AP story dated 07 Oct 97, filed at 12. 31 pm EDT, says that the IRC has handed over 60,000 WWII-era documents to Israel (copies also to the USHMM)." This statement is just plain wrong in one essential detail: as noted in the Subject heading of the post - and in the AP story which I reprint below - the agency being discussed is NOT the IRC [International Rescue Committee], but the Red Cross. This error on Thompson's part is especially important as he went on to state that "[the agency in question] admitted a 'moral failure' in not speaking out against the Holocaust while it was happening." If any of us - not to mention "major newspapers," decides to "pick up on the story for their Wednesday editions, I can only hope that they do not make such an egregious mistake. Especially in such an important and sensitive topic, it is crucial to not malign or affect the record or reputation of an agency unfairly, but let the record of each group's actions, inactions, histories ... speak for themselves. >>> Arieh Lebowitz If you want to see the AP article, e-Mail me.
