I once heard that "hermeneutical suspicion" was a mark of scholarly concern. Long before such phrases were heard, Alexander Campbell stated some ground rules for the study of texts: "Who said it? In what situa- tion? To what end? ..." Who said "Hitler didn't go far enough?" To whom? Who heard it said? In what setting? Excessively zealous "Christians," on their way to hell, have for long said with godlike assurance that unconverted Jews were headed for hell. But I would like some genuine validation of the other obscene remark before I swallow it whole. - FHL +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ | | | FRANKLIN LITTELL FHL@VM.TEMPLE.EDU | | DEPARTMENT OF RELIGION | | TEMPLE UNIVERSITY 610-667-5437 | | | +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
