I write to say thanks to Eric Broomfield for his thoughtful and helpful post about the existence of a secret history of Anglo-American intelligence efforts during WWII and to encourage him to expand his posts on the information that was available (or unavailable), when, and how. I would particularly be interested in knowing about what these volumes indicate not only about knowledge of police units in mid-late 1941 but about deportations and camps in 1942 -- and with what American agencies information was shared and when. Later, the Office of Strategic Services obtained less direct information compiled as "Reports on Jewry" from the Postal and Telegraph Censor in Great Britain. These reports are available in the CIA Papers in the National Archives. I have seen reports # 4, 5, and 7 -- dated 10/21/42, 2/9/43, and 2/26/44 respectively. Report #5 begins with the cold observation that this "brings the deportation and mass murder a stage further towards the apparently intended climax of complete extermination. . . ." I look forward to finding out more about what was known, when, and how, and with whom information was shared, through such work as is being done by Richard Breitman, Eric Broomfield, and others. -- Kenneth Waltzer, Professor waltzer@pilot.msu.edu James Madison College Michigan State University phone: 517-353-3372 (office) East Lansing, MI 48825-1205 fax: 517-432-1804 (office)
