Universities with smaller gallery spaces may be interested in a show of 20 paintings by Fritz Hirschberger of San Francisco, available without rental charge. Hirschberger is 84 years of age, a native of Dresden. Trained as an artist in Germany, Hirschberger and his family were exprelled from Germany to Krakow in October, 1938. An organizer for Jabotinsky in Krakow, Hirschberger fled to the USSR when Germany invaded Poland. He was arrested by the NKVD and sentenced to 20 years in the GULAG for illegally entering the Soviet Union. He was released in June, 1941 when Hitler invaded the USSR and sent to Kazkhstan, where he became an artillery instructor for the Anders Army. He fought with Polish forces through the Middle East, El Alemein, Tobruk, Monte Cassino and finished the war in Berlin. His family perished at Auschwitz. He wife journeyed to England just before the war and was interned as a German national on the Isle of Man. She was able to correspond with her parents in Dresden until they were deported. Hirschberger's paintings are called "SUR-RATIONAL PAINTINGS," and deal with themes of indifference, persecution and some theological issues. They are painted in a mixed expressionist/naive style which are very powerful. The artist uses a transparent paint and renaissance type glazing. Each work is 40 x 60 inches in size. The art has been shown at a dozen sites around the USA, in Dresden and at the Terezin Museum. There is no charge for the exhibit which takes up between 135 and 160 running feet of space. Transportation is the only expense but this may be offset by a grant upon application if needed. Hirschberger will come to speak about his art and experiences but refuses to charge a fee. The only expense for him is air fare. A color brochure and lengthly explanation of the paintings is available.
