On pages 304-306 he discusses some of practices used by women to cope when their husbands were away whaling for years at a time, including opium and "'He's at Homes': porcelain sexual aids from China." The book describes how quirky the islanders were, and how they deliberately distanced themselves from any lingering Puritanism on the mainland.
