Please submit 200-word abstracts by 28 January to Scott Richmond at scr@uchicago.edu. * * * QUEER CRITICISM Panel Proposal Queer Screens Conference Glasgow, Scotland 6-8 July 2007 http://www.screen.arts.gla.ac.uk/pages/conference.html Drawing from several moments in the history of film criticism, this panel seeks to reexamine the work of queer critics, exploring the intersections of criticism and theory, as well as the role of film writing in the creation of alternative viewing and filmmaking practices. Tracking a tradition of criticism from H.D. through Parker Tyler and beyond, this panel will turn on the following questions: What is queer criticism? How do biographical details inform/problematize/shape our reception of queer writers' critical project? Is it possible to identify a queer methodology in the work of queer film critics? What categories or frameworks can be deployed to bring out the queerness of critical projects? Can these writers' idiosyncratic strategies and styles be said to constitute their own genre of criticism? This panel hopes, at a very basic level, to perform an intervention in the canon of film criticism and theory. Beyond this, we hope to track the contours of an emergent queer film theory before the of influence of identity politics and post 1960's psychoanalytic film theory, particularly by emphasizing the queer critics' role in destabilizing dominant filmmaking and spectatorship practices through an operation of repossessing, re-mythologizing, re-investing images and restoring them to their polymorhphous perversity.
