Matt: I don't have time to comment--any time I might've had to do that has just been used up in other posts, rather obviously, and I've need to start doing what I'm paid to do here at my institution--but, having had to do a last-minute stand-in a year ago for an introductory modern-Middle-East course, I have to say that (though I can't speak from the perspective of firsthand research) I agree completely with your historical analysis re the British hand in mucking things up.
