Two items concerning Arabic / Ajami based scripts and ICT: First is a couple of fonts that apparently accommodate all Arabic characters in Unicode 4.0, which should cover most needs of Ajami transcriptions of languages like Hausa. The following message from Ernst Treml describes them: > I found two of the required fonts at > http://www.zaban.net/paktype/ > and > Microsoft Arabic TypeSetting font > ============================= > I was told this font is > currently only available with the purchase of Microsoft Office 2003 > Proofing Tools Kit or the Multilanguage User Interface Packs. > > An OpenType Unicode-enabled font for Microsoft Windows (2000, XP) operating > system and Microsoft Office (2002, 2003, .NET) supporting Arabic script > languages (Arabic, Persian, Ottoman Turkish, Adighe, Baluchi, Berber, > Dargwa, Ingush, Kashmiri, Kazakh, Kirghiz, Lahnda, Maghrib Arabic, Old > Hausa, Old Malay, Pashto, Sindhi, Tunisian Arabic, Turkic, Uighur, Urdu), > archaic letters (dotless kaf and ba'), Qur'anic annotations signs, > presentation forms, and all major systems of transliteration. Although it does not specifically mention African language use of Arabic script, I include it below as it may be of interest to people specializing in them. Don Osborn Bisharat.net "Computational Approaches to Arabic Script-based Languages" Short Title: coling2004 workshop Date: 28-Aug-2004 - 28-Aug-2004 Location: Geneva, Switzerland Contact: Karine Megerdoomian Contact Email: karinem@inxight.com Meeting URL: http://members.cox.net/karinem/COLING2004 Linguistic Sub-field: Computational Linguistics Subject Language: Arabic, Standard ,Kurdi ,Pashto, Southern ,Farsi, Western ,Urdu Call Deadline: 01-Apr-2004 This is a session of the following conference: 20th International Conference on Computational Linguistics Meeting Description: Recently, there has been a surge of interest in the study of the languages of the Middle East, especially Arabic, Persian (Farsi), Pashto and Urdu. Computational applications for proper name identification, entity recognition, categorization, information retrieval, summarization, machine translation and other implementations are currently in high demand. The goal of this workshop, being held as a session of COLING 2004, is to provide a forum for those involved in the development of NLP systems in Arabic script languages to exchange ideas, approaches and implementations of computational systems; to discuss the common challenges faced by all practitioners; and to assess the state of the art in the field. The workshop is to be held at the Univeristy of Geneva, Switzerland on August 28th, 2004. Invited Speaker: Martin Kay (Stanford University) Workshop website: http://members.cox.net/karinem/COLING2004 [full announcement available at http://linguistlist.org/issues/15/15-1939.html ] _____________________________________ Please send your question or comment about the USA in plain ASCII text to H-USA on-line editor John Philips: <philips@mail.h-net.msu.edu>
