Nigerien president Mamadou Tandja gave a very strong statement in favor of polio vaccination near Maradi yesterday. A colleague who was there was very impressed by the speech, which was in Hausa and did not mince words about the need for the vaccine. I will try to forward more info. The French language official daily here in Niamey, Le Sahel, had a write-up. Panapress also had coverage, which you need subscription to read (Eng. or Fr.): http://www.panapress.com/paysindexlat.asp?code=eng037 http://www.panapress.com/paysindexlat.asp?code=fre037 On the way home from work I caught part of a Fulfulde broadcast on the govt. radio 91.3 FM exhorting people to immunize children against polio. On this side of the border there seems to be no waffling on the polio issue, at least on the official level. Polio cases in Niger last year were up from the previous year, and like in other countries of the region where polio has seen a resurgence, the situation in Nigeria has been blamed.
