Founding Editor, H-Net Council Member [editor's note: It's not often I have a message I can send to both H-USA and H-Hausa, but Harold was not only a founding member of H-Africa, he was the guest, in Japan, of American historians. His knowledge and fervor were very wide-ranging indeed, and he is sorely missed. -JP] Invitation to two days of memorial and academic seminar for Prof. Harold G. Marcus Dear friends and colleagues, As you will know by now, we have unexpectedly and tragically lost an important member of our academic and human community, Professor Harold G. Marcus. We invite you and all who wish to come to two-days of memorial on May 4-5 for our deceased friend and colleague. Please join us for whatever time you are available even if you cannot attend both days' events. 1) Sunday, May 4, circa 1 pm - Unveiling of the memorial stone for Professor Marcus at the Mt. Hope Cemetery (on Mt. Hope Road in Lansing). This unveiling is being organized by Harold's widow, Cressida Marcus. 2) Sunday, May 4, 3:00-6:00 pm - A Time of Remembrance of Harold Marcus - At this occasion, we plan to have Ethiopian music and a playing of the MSU Carillon; remembrances of Harold - both designated and volunteered "open microphone" from anyone who is there; a poem from the Ethiopian Poet Laureate, Tsegaye Gebre Medhin (tent.); and Ethiopian food for all who come. At this time, we are expecting statements at least from Daniel Kendie, Daniel Teferra, John W. Eadie, Mel Page, Grover Hudson, David Bailey, Idrien Resnick, Kenneth Wylie, and others....chaired by Prof. Assefa Mehretu. This event will be in a large tent on the MSU Circle in front of Morrill Hall (park in the Morrill Parking Lot). 3) Monday, May 5, 10:00 am-12 noon - A Seminar on "Ethiopian Studies and History: The Contributions of Harold G. Marcus," with prominent Ethiopian. U.S., and other scholars, chaired by Prof. David Robinson. The principal presentation on Ethiopian studies and history will be given by Dr. Bahru Zewde of Addis Ababa University. He will be followed by former students and colleagues of Prof. Marcus speaking about his academic, Ethiopian studies, mentoring, and other contributions. This seminar will be in 305 International Center (the new third floor meeting room). Housing: Because MSU commencement ceremonies are on Saturday, May 3, we believe that you are not likely to find hotel rooms available on Friday May 2, though there should be some greater slack on Saturday night. If you wish to reserve a hotel room on this weekend, you should do so quickly. We can provide you with information on potential motels/hotels if you let us know your needs.
