The African Section of the African and Middle Eastern Division(AMED), Library of Congress is pleased to announce the following event to be held on December 6, 2002 in conjunction with the African Studies Association annual meeting in Washington, DC. Sudanic/Maghaarbi Studies Unit (SMSU) Symposium in the AMED Conference Room, Thomas Jefferson Building, Room 220 11:00-1:00 p.m. Friday, December 6, 2002 The African and Middle Eastern Division (AMED)of the Library of Congress is pleased to host a symposium sponsored by the newly established Sudanic/Maghaarbi Studies Unit, Vassar College, to discuss new research directions and how scholars may be encouraged to re-examine and explore the study of the historical and dynamic cultural interactions between and among the many peoples of West Africa, the Maghreb, the Sahel and across the continent to the Republic of Sudan and the Horn of Africa. Preservation of and increased access to primary sources are key issues participants will explore. Dr. Constance Berkley, Vassar College, will present an overview of the recent inaugural international symposium held Nov. 7-9, 2002 at the college entitled: "Africa's Intellectual Caravans: Bilad as-Sudan wa'l Maghaaribi," followed by a discussion of how attendees may participate in the goals of the SMSU. All interested scholars are encouraged to attend whether members of the African Studies Association or not.
