Date: Thu, 31 Oct 2002 11:26:17 -0600 (CST) From: Don Osborn <email@example.com> Subject: Ajami diacritics Thanks, John. The topic of Ajami / Arabic-based writing and computers came up previously on this working group (May 6-7 & 10 ), with the brief discussion touching on a few points, including support of Mac OSX for Arabic (on the latter, John has highlighted the new OS10.2 on the H- Hausa list**). These are accessible at http://lists.kabissa.org/lists/ archives/public/a12n-collaboration/ The current issue of diacritics for different language transcriptions with Arabic characters is one we haven't really treated. I believe, John, that you had earlier indicated that Unicode has all the necessaries for Hausa Ajami. Lameen has just written to say he has "since found that the diacritic in question is better regarded as a stylistic variant of a shadda, so that may not be a problem." I'm not sure what the vowel diacritics are in Mandinka Ajami - hopefully Jacob can clarify that (is there a web reference - .pdf or image file - that is accessible?). If I recall correctly in Pular Ajami there was a dot used for e and o (though there was more to the system than that) - is it similar in Mandinka? Is there anything published that compares Ajami across the region? Don Don Osborn firstname.lastname@example.org *Bisharat! A language, technology & development initiative *Bisharat!
