Submitted by: James F. Tent JTENT@SBS.SBS.UAB.EDU Dear Colleagues: I am editing the reports, diary entries, and correspondence of Edward Yarnall HARTSHORNE, a Harvard sociologist and later higher education expert in Military Government in Germany (OMGUS) in 1945- 1946. Although there is much information by him, I have found remarkably little in the way of reports, memoranda or correspondence about this remarkable University Officer in the OMGUS records. Professor Walter L. DORN advised General Clay for a time during the Occupation and was instrumental in placing Hartshorne in charge of a key denazification effort in higher educational institutions in Bavaria in the summer of 1946. It was there that the latter was shot to death in late August on an Autobahn near Nuremberg by a young German criminal. Since the OMGUS documents have so little information about Hartshorne, I am seeking other contemporary sources about him. It is possible that Professor Dorn left behind a written account Hartshorne. If anyone has knowledge of the whereabouts and availability of the Dorn Papers or other sources that might describe Hartshorne and his activities, I would be most grateful to receive such information. Sincerely, James F. Tent
