Submitted by: Peter Hoffmann <CYPH@MUSICA.MCGILL.CA> Re: 'Gregory Douglas' and 'Geheimakte Gestapo-Mueller' Last November, someone giving as a return address 'Yetta Schwartz, 350 5th Ave., New York, NY 10018' sent me excerpts from a book entitled GEHEIMAKTE GESTAPO-MUELLER. DOKUMENTE UND ZEUGNISSE. AUS DEN US-GEHEIMARCHIVEN, described as prepared by 'Gregory Douglas', translated from the English original, and published by Druffel-Verlag, Berg am Starnberger See, 1995. In the spring of 1996 someone named Stanley Cook of Incline Village, NV 89452-8996 wrote to me to recommend to me the English edition as GESTAPO CHIEF. THE 1948 INTERROGATION OF HEINRICH MUELLER, by 'Gregory Douglas'. The excerpts I received include a report on Colonel Graf Stauffenberg's 20 July 1944 assassination attack against Hitler, and alleged statements by the former head of the Secret State Police (Gestapo), SS-Gruppenfuehrer Heinrich Mueller, relating to the disposition of the bodies of General Ludwig Beck, General Friedrich Olbricht, Colonel Claus Count Stauffenberg, Colonel Albrecht Mertz von Quirnheim and Lieutenant Werner von Haeften, all of whom had been shot on 20 July 1944. The 'report' begins with the explosion of the bomb in Hitler's briefing room on 20 July 1944 at 12.50 p.m. and ends with Stauffenberg's and Haeften's flight back to Berlin. The 'report' is said (in the excerpts from GEHEIMAKTE) to have been written by H.Mueller himself. The version of the report reproduced in GEHEIMAKTE varies somewhat from the version in the Bundesarchiv, on National Archives microfilm copies, and in the two published editions of the post-20-July-1944 Secret- Police-interrogation summaries (SPIEGELBILD EINER VERSCHWOERUNG, Stuttgart, 1961, 2nd edn 1984). The other excerpts I received purport to reproduce transcripts of post-war interrogations of H.Mueller. According to 'H.Mueller', the bodies of Beck, Olbricht, Stauffenberg, Mertz and Haeften were exhumed, apparently on 21 July 1944, photographed with and without their uniforms, cremated, and flushed down a toilet in the crematorium. 'H.Mueller' is quoted as commenting in this alleged interrogation that he was advising the family not to look too hard for poor Claus, who was in his appropriate environment. I suspect that the 'details' about Stauffenberg are the reason why the material was sent to me, since I had just published my STAUFFENBERG. I suspect also that 'Gregory Douglas' is identical with someone who called himself 'Peter Stahl' when he telephoned me from California a few times some years ago to tell me essentially the story now published in GEHEIMAKTE. The fact that a publisher well-known for publishing works by paleo- and neo-Nazis brought out the German edition of the book does little to lend it credibility, and the other circumstances surrounding the publication do not improve it. 'Yetta Schwartz' cannot be located at the return address, which is that of the Empire State Building. Some apparently fictional works (novels) were published under the names of 'Gregory Douglas' and 'Gregory A. Douglas', respectively (perhaps pseudonyms of 'Peter Stahl'), by Zebra Books (850 Third Ave., New York, NY 10022; 1-800-221- 2647) in 1972 and 1981. On 23 December 1995 I wrote to Mr. Gregory Douglas c/o Zebra Books, 850 Third Ave., New York, NY 10022, U.S.A., asking which archive had custody of the report on Colonel Graf Stauffenberg's 20 July 1944 assassination attack against Hitler, how the report was identified in the archive, and, which archive had custody of the transcripts of interrogations of Heinrich Mueller, and how they were identified in the archive. On 4 June 1996 I received a form letter from 'Gregory Douglas', which did not address my questions. I wrote again to repeat them, but have not had a further reply. Gitta Sereny revealed in a review article in THE OBSERVER of 21 April 1996 ('Spin time for Hitler') that eight years ago 'Peter Stahl' had urged upon her a seven-page CIC 'agent report' dated November 1948, and signed by Andrew L. Venters and Severin F. Wallace, which purported to show that Odilo Globocnik and Heinrich Mueller had been spirited out of Europe in 1945 by American occupation authorities with the connivance of British occupation authorities, and that the 'agent report' had been proved a forgery since there is proof that Globocnik was dead. In the case of Heinrich Mueller, the evidence of his death in Berlin in 1945 is less conclusive. But in view of the internal and external evidence sketched above, I suspect that the H.Mueller 'interrogation' and the other 'documents' are spurious.
