Sent: Tuesday, September 21, 2010 1:09 PM Subject: AAAS-CHF History Seminar, Oct 7: James Fleming on Weather & Climate Control Dear Colleagues, The AAAS-CHF History Seminar is pleased to announce that historian James R. Fleming will be our featured speaker on Thursday, October 7, 2010, from 4:30-6:00 pm in the AAAS auditorium. A reception will follow. Dr. Fleming will discuss his latest book Fixing the Sky: The Checkered History of Weather and Climate Control. The AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellowships Program is a special co-host for this event. Dr. Fleming is a professor of Science, Technology and Society at Colby College. From 2006-2007, he held a AAAS Roger Revelle Fellowship at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. In Fixing the Sky, he explores how scientists, climate engineers, and other actors have sought to manipulate the planet's weather and climate for various ends with little concern for the political, military, or ethical implications or the ecological consequences. Dr. Fleming's previous books include The Callendar Effect (American Meteorological Society, 2007) and Historical Perspectives on Climate Change (Oxford University Press, 1998). The seminar is part of a series co-hosted by the AAAS Archives and the Chemical Heritage Foundation's Center for Contemporary History and Policy that explores social, institutional, and intellectual histories of contemporary policy problems that are interwoven with developments in science and technology.
