Dated: Wednesday, 16 June 1999 Dear Listmembers: I have a request I'd like to submit on behalf of a colleague in U.S. history who is writing a book on connections between the Internal Revenue Service, Watergate, and other perfidious matters. Please direct any responses directly to him (John Andrew, email: J_ANDREW@ACAD.FANDM.EDU) unless you feel the list would also benefit. Thanks in advance for your help! Background: An internal U.S. govt. memo mentions a man named Artime who was a Cuban exile supposed to be in charge of a landing force in 1964-65 for a second invasion of Cuba - an invasion that never happened - but was code-named "The Second Naval Guerrilla" and tied to the CIA. Howard Hunt later tried to recruit him for the "plumbers" in the Nixon years. Artime refused and Barker was recruited instead. Artime reappeared at the time of Watergate coverup when he was sent money from LaRue for distribution to the family and friends of Barker and Gonzalez. Artime later became a meat importer in the Miami area. His close associate and perhaps secret partner was a man named Buttari - a former Cabinet minister in the Batista regime - who became an U.S. citizen in 1970, later employed by HEW in Miami as a Special Consultant. Buttari was also a close friend of Bebe Rebozo, Richard Nixon and others, and was part of a Fisher Island Syndicate. The question is: What information does anyone have regarding Artime, Buttari, this "second invasion," and connections to the CIA/White House, etc?
