According to the 1887 edition of Boyd's Directory of the District of Columbia (available for all to consult at the Washingtoniana Division of the DC Public Library, and other locations, and also searchable through Google Books), Powell lived at 910 M Street NW. MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit From: "Renee Braden" <rbraden@ngs.org> Might anyone know the address of John Wesley Powell's house? 1870's or so - probably much longer. I have the attached photo from the National Anthropological Archives at the Smithsonian but it gives no other data. Could be Capitol Hill, but not sure. Thanks all for any clues, Renee Braden Powell's house <http://sirismm.si.edu/naa/33/02869100.jpg> [Note: In A River Running West: The Life of John Wesley Powell By Donald Worster has him at 901 M St NW. In 1872, he quit his teaching job and moved to Washington, D.C. In 1879 Powell helped set up the U.S. Geological Survey which he would become the director of in 1881. Powell was also the director of the Smithsonian Institution's Bureau of Ethnology, which he directed for 23 years until his death in 1902. His career showed no signs of slowing down and in 1888, he and 32 other men founded the National Geographic Society. This year he also started a survey of potential dam sites in the west, but in 1891, Senator William Stewart attacked his credibility and Congress eventually cut his funding. In May of 1894, John resigned as Director of the Geological Survey. In 1902, with his wife and daughter at his side, John Wesley Powell died at his home in Maine on September 3 at the age of 68.--Ed] -- ______________________________ Renee Braden, Manager National Geographic Libraries & Information Services Archives, Records, and Special Collections 1145 Seventeenth Street NW Washington DC 20036 202-828-6697 rbraden@ngs.org ____________________ ____ You read it on H-DC!
