Although rather dated: 1) Thiện Ân, Thích. Buddhism and Zen in Vietnam in relation to the development of Buddhism in Asia. Los Angeles : College of Oriental Studies, Graduate School, 1975 Also a specialized but intriguing source: 2) Nguyen, Cuong Tu. Zen in medieval Vietnam : a study and translation of Thiền uyển tập anh. Honolulu : University of Hawai‘i Press, 1997. It contains both a limited historical survey of medieval Vietnamese Buddhism, and more importantly, a translation of the Thiền uyển tập anh, which is a very useful (if taken critically) primary work in the "eminent monks genre" on the history of the Vietnamese Zen community. Depending on your needs this could be a great way for a student to get into one of the key primary sources. A better survey in French: 3)Minh Chi. Le Bouddhisme au Vietnam : des origines au XIXe siècle. Hanoi : The Gioi, 1993. I remember this being a reasonably good survey when I looked through it several years ago. Also, it may have since been translated into English. And for a more contemporary picture, there is an interesting chapter in: 4) McHale, Shawn Frederick. Print and power : Confucianism, communism, and Buddhism in the making of modern Vietnam. Honolulu : University of Hawai‘i Press, 2004.
