H-ASIA Date: February 4, 1997 ************************************************************** From: djmilly@vt.edu (Deborah J. Milly) Subject: Re: H-Asia: CAMPANA-Hong Kong request of aid The person whose work is most likely to be helpful is Ronald Skeldon, of University of Hong Kong. He was the editor of the volume *Reluctant Exiles? Migration from Hong Kong and the New Overseas Chinese* (M.E. Sharpe) and has published much on migration in the region. I don't know whether this volume or his other publications will have all the data you want, but I believe you would find at least some of what you are looking for. Also, you should take a look at articles by Professor Skeldon in the as several years of the *Asian and Pacific Migration Journal*. Especially see summary article on patterns in Hong Kong in the an issue from 1995 (vol.4 no. 4)--the data included is recent but the article summarizes available what data sources are currently available. You also might want to take a look at the website for Chulalongkorn University's Asian Research Center for Migration. I have tried all day to reach the website and have been unable to. However, they have made quantitative data available by country, and this can be downloaded. I don't know whether they have longterm data or how far back it would go. As far as I know, the URL for the ARCM is: http://www.chula.edu/INSTITUTE/ARCM/main.htm By way of self-introduction, since I've been lurking for several months now, I am a political scientist with a primary specialty in Japan. I have a book forthcoming on Pov ese State. However, my current research involves political dynamics over labor migration in Asia, with special attention to 1) comparative domestic institutions and responses, and 2) emerging patterns of coordination across countries.
