H-ASIA August 22, 1995 Member self-introducton and request for help ************************************************************************* From: peter aradi <paradi@ionet.net> This is a note to belatedly introduce myself to fellow H-ASIA members and at the same time ask for their assistance. While my formal educational background is in history, I spent my working career in the computer industry and just recently retired. Since the fall semester of 1993 I have served as an adjunct at several universities and colleges, primarily teaching World and Western Civilization and American History survey classes. This coming fall I will teach a course on Modern China and Japan at the University of Tulsa and other courses at Phillips University. My graduate research concentrated on Showa Japan, and I completed two master theses, "Japanese Political Power Patterns: A Case Study of Prime Minister Ohira Masayoshi" and "The Staging of the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games and the Resurrection of Japanese Nationalism." My present research interest concerns the religious roots of miniature gardens, dwarfed trees, tray landscapes, and "viewing stones" in Northeast Asia; their subsequent proliferation in China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, and Thailand; and the relatively recent, twentieth-century spread of these practices in the form of penjing, pensai, bonsai, saikei, suiseki, and others, to places outside their traditional area, including other continents. I would appreciate any leads for material and sources on this subject beyond Rolf Stein's "World in Miniature: Container Gardens and Dwellings in Far Eastern Religious Thought." Sincerely, Peter J.
