H-ASIA Date: August 24, 1995 1)************************************************************** Subj:Japan Policy Research Institute From: cjohnson@ucsd.edu (Chalmers Johnson) For those interested in the Japan Policy Research Institute, let me suggest that you look at its world-wide-web site. The URL is: http://nobunaga.unm.edu/JPRI/ This site has available a statement of purpose and membership fees, list of events, list of members of the board of advisers with bios and photos, and access to all back publications (for this you need a password that comes with membership). JPRI's concept is rather than try to raise money, it is better to get to where you don't need any. That is what the organization has done, which allows it to say things and study subjects that others dare not. It also contributes to trust in what JPRI decides to say. The organization is dependent primarily on the dues of close to 300 members, and it receives advanced telecommunications services from the Center for Japanese Studies at the University of New Mexico. JPRI does not take money from any Japanese or American corporation, and its staff is unpaid. It does not have offices but exists on computers in San Diego, Tokyo, Albuquerque, and Washington DC. It is backed up by a distinguished board of advisers. The website also tells about the JPRI's Workshops coming up in September (in San Diego), October (in Albuquerque), and December (in Washington DC) and how to attend (attendance is free to JPRI members). We are still working on the web site, doing some editing on various displays, but it is substantially ready now to provide information in an easily accessible manner. Comments would be appreciated.
