H-ASIA August 24, 1995 Further response re: query on the Kingdom of Lo/Sarat Chandra Das ************************************************************************** From: deschene@jhuvms.hcf.jhu.edu (Mary Des Chene) In response to Barbara Campbell: The Kingdom of Lo refers to the Mustang region of Nepal. Sarat Chandra Das is certainly an interesting figure. To my knowledge there has been no extensive study of his career (if I am wrong, citations please!). Besides (during?) his spying activities, he did linguistic work, producing a Tibetan-English dictionary, and there are several collections of his work on Tibetan religion. Of most interest to B. Campbell, however, would be the following accounts of his travels. Das, Sarat Chandra, 1849-1917. NARRATIVE OF A JOURNEY TO TASHILHUNPO IN 1879 / ([India : s.n., 1881]) Das, Sarat Chandra, NARRATIVE OF A JOURNEY ROUND LAKE YAMDO (PALTI), AND IN LHOKHA, YARLUNG, AND SAKYA, IN 1882 / ([India : s.n., 1887]) Das, Sarat Chandra, NARRATIVE OF A JOURNEY TO LHASA IN 1881-82 / ([India : s.n., 1885]) Das, Sarat Chandra, JOURNEY TO LHASA AND CENTRAL TIBET / (London : J. Murray, 1902.) Das, Sarat Chandra, INDIAN PANDITS IN THE LAND OF SNOW / (Delhi : Delhi Printers Prakashan, 1978.) Originally published: 1893. Das, Sarat Chandra, AUTOBIOGRAPHY; ([Calcutta] Indian Studies: Past & Present [1969]) Appeared originally in Modern review, 1908-1909.
