H-ASIA August 6, 1995 Query re: NPR report on Japan's willingness to surrender in 1945 ************************************************************************* From: WATERS@middlebury.edu Today (August 5) on "All Things Considered" NPR (National Public Radio) broadcast a generally careful and balanced overview of the atomic bombs and Japan's surrender. But toward the end the narrator (Scott Simon?) stated that the August 10 response to the Potsdam Declaration included the demand that Japan retain Manchuria. This is at odds with accounts by Butow, Akira Irie (sic: Iriye) and the Pacific War Research Society (Taiehiuyo sensokai) (sic :Taiheiyo), all of which state that the sole proviso to acceptance was "with the understanding that the said declaration does not comprise any demand which prejudices the prerogratives of His Majesty as a Sovereign Ruler." I presume NPR goofed. Did it, or do the NPR folks know something I missed?
