H-ASIA August 2, 1995 A summary of posts received on the query concerning graduate programs in Korean Studies. As per Jim Hearne's request I have compiled an "edited" summary below. I have tried to eliminate the editorial comments, any opinon is that of the respondent. In case anyone missed my original post I was merely asking for suggestions. Caveat emptor. YONSEI UNIVERSITY has probably the oldest and most extensive program. Both undergraduate and graduate courses are offered in English in the Division of International Education. Both non-degree programs and courses leading to the B.A. or M.A. are available. SOGANG UNIVERSITY, also in Seoul, has a semester-long program offered in conjunction with the Council on International Educational Exchange. There are also language programs at SEOUL UNIVERSITY, EWHA WOMEN`S UNIVERSITY, and, I believe, at KOREA (KORYO) UNIVERSITY, all in Seoul. ---- East Asian Studies Center at Indiana University has a Korean Studies program for undergrad and Master's degrees. They offer Korean language through the East Asian Summer Language Institute. Offering many scholarships and other incentives to participate. --- University of British Columbia, Korean Studies program, Language courses and linguistics, pre-modern history), --- University of Chicago acquired a major chunk of change to establish a Korean Studies program (something in the vicinity of $5 million). On the other hand, they lost their one first-class Korean specialist, Bruce Cumings, to Northwestern a couple of years ago. --- Indiana University, for more information check out their www pages at http://www.easc.indiana.edu. Be sure to look at the pages for the department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, and the East Asian Summer Language Institute. --- UCLA two historians: one specialist in traditional cultural history (John Duncan), another in contemporary intellectual history (Henry Em). based in the Dept. of East Asian Languages and Cultures Also have faculty in literature, religious studies, sociology, anthropology, and linguistics. --- Harvard, historian of modern Korea (Carter Eckert), adding a literature specialist. --- Hawaii, two historians, --- UCLA and Berkeley, at least, both offer summer intensives in Korean. The University of Hawaii, first-rate source material in the University's Asia Collection. Large number of faculty experts on Korea. They do have a summer language program with intensive Korean. The major focus of the program is history. Dr. James Palais offers two required K. History courses plus an optional seminar. Other requirements (other than language) are a Korean Society class and a graduate seminar.
